Rules and Information

What is Weiqi?

Weiqi (围棋), also known as Go in western countries and Baduk in South Korea, is one of the most complex Chinese strategy board games (harder than Chess, Checkers, and Wuziqi). This game required 2 people and most Weiqi game is played on a 19'19 board grid. However, some are played on 9'9 to shorten the time. The objective of this game is to  to surround and capture enemy stones, dominating the board.

Starting the Game

Make sure there are 181 black stones, 180 white stones, and a 19'19 board grid (board grid varies.) 1 Player will have the black stones and another player will have the white stones. Unlike Chess and Checkers, the person with the black pieces will go first. He/she has 2 choices: Pla ce the stone anywhere where 2 lines intersect or said pass which will skip their turn. The next player will do the same thing and the game continues. This game ends if 2 people said pass in 1 round.

Liberties and Capture

An unoccupied square that is next  (not diagonal) to a stone is called liberty.  If all liberties have been taken by the enemy's stone, then he/she can capture that stone.  Adding stone(s) next (not diagonal) to your other stone will form a one whole unit. This unit  will have more liberties. Finally, it is not allow to place a stone where it has no liberties

Example: In image D, if white placed his/her stone in 1, black's stone will be captured.

Scoring

There are 2 common types of scoring system: Chinese Area Scoring (original) and Japanese Territory Scoring. In Chinese Area Scoring, after both players passed in 1 round, each player will count the number of their stones on the board and the number of empty intersections surrounded by that player's stone. The Japanese Territory Scoring is similar to the Chinese Area Scoring except instead of counting the number of stones on the board, you have to count the number of captured stones.  Using either scoring system, the person with the higher score wins the game.
